Our clients, a couple with two small boys, had recently found their “forever home” when they contacted us. Moving from a tiny terrace to a 5-bed Federation house, the client’s main challenge was making the front part of the house more functional, and also to add a bit of life to the empty spaces. The original sitting and dining rooms had been previously turned into one long, narrow space and the hallway was also a little stark.

The couple’s tastes were also wildly different to one another, so we were presented with a fun challenge to honour both personalities and still create a cohesive aesthetic.

The starting point for the design was the existing architecture. I wanted to bring character and warmth and also a little bit of formality to the spaces, as was their original intention. I also wanted to balance the needs of the family and make sure the spaces were actually used.

To achieve this, first of all, the decorative cornices and ceiling roses were re-instated. Then, to separate the two spaces, while still maintaining a connection, a partial wall lined with bookshelves was installed. The rooms were also switched around, so that the living room was at the front of the house, leading out to the front garden, and the dining room was closer to the kitchen.

Colour was used to define the feel of each area and create a journey from one room to the other. The colours are quite traditional, and paired with contemporary furniture and light fittings, we were able to achieve a balance.

The result was a complete transformation in the spaces (see the before and after shots here), and the best part was that the rooms actually feel bigger than they did when it was just one long space. The clients now have an extra entertaining room for guests, and another living area which is perfect for reading a book with a cup of tea in front of the fireplace.

"After moving into our home last year with not enough furniture and no styling skills, we knew we needed help filling a section of the house that was nothing but an empty shell. No character, no warmth and as a result was completely unused.

By pure luck we were handed Alex. I hadn’t seen anything she had ever done but we liked her energy so put all our trust in her.

Everyone who comes to our house now cannot believe what she has created. To adding the perfect cornices, cabinetry, paint colours, furniture, lighting, styling pieces and wall coverings. Every detail was taken care of.

It wasn’t until I sat in my now favourite room of the house with the fireplace on, my babies in bed and complete silence that I truly got to appreciate what a brilliant job Alex had done. To be able to perfectly balance my husband’s and my taste; which are on different ends of the spectrum, and that we both love what Alex has created is a true credit to her.

Thank you so so much for creating such a classy, warm and enveloping space in our home, we will definitely see you in the future as we work our way through the rest!"
