Tips & Advice

And it makes sense, right? In order for someone to do a good job on these tasks for me, I needed to be clear about what I wanted, and also give them the materials and information they need to get going.

It got me thinking about when a new client engages us on their interior design project. Overall, yes — hiring us will take a HUGE load off your mental to-do list and also end up with something a lot better than you could have done yourself (I know this because I’ve had clients tell me over and over again). At the same time though, there is a time and energy investment needed on your end, too, to ensure we can deliver on something that really feels like “you”.

Today I wanted to answer some FAQs about your role as the client in an interior design project. Specifically –

1. How much time do I need to invest in a project?

2. What do you need from me before you can get started?

3. Will I need to be involved with project managing the renovation?

So, here we go.

1. How much time do I need to invest in a project?

While we do the bulk of the work for you (from floor plans, to coming up with the overall style, to choosing every tile, fabric, chair, light, tap you need etc. etc.), it’s vital to have input from you as well.

The way we operate, the most “work” you need to do is in the initial stages of a project, and it peters off from then. We do this so that we’re not constantly asking you for your opinion or information. We get the information we need, upfront, and aim to hit the nail on the head (or very close to!) in our first presentation back to you.

Below I’ve broken down what we need from you, per stage:

Initial Phases:

Concept Phase:

Design Phase:

Execution Phase:

2. What do you need from me before you can get started?

Before we can start on your project, we need you to:

3. Will I need to be involved with project managing the renovation?

In short – only if you want to. But for the bulk of it, we’re here to manage things for you so you that you’re involvement is minimal (i.e. exciting stuff only) when it comes to any construction works.

Everyone’s heard the horror stories of things going wrong on site once a renovation begins, and we aim to avoid these by overseeing things on your behalf.

When you engage us, we are in regular contact with the builder and trades to ensure your approved design is being followed as closely as possible. We are basically on-call for any trade RFIs (requests for info), to make changes to drawings, to source alternate materials or fittings if they’re out of stock, and make a myriad of tiny on-site decisions on your behalf. We also make regular site visits to discuss things in person with each trade as they undertake the work. On top of this, we order all the tiles, tapware, lighting, furniture and anything else required for your project, receive and check all deliveries, and deal with any mistakes.

Each week we send through a run-down of what’s happened on site that week, any crucial issues or decisions that need to be made, and if we’re tracking on-schedule. Of course you can also make as many visits to site as you like – it is a pretty exciting time in the project, after all.

So there you have it — that just about sums up your role in an interior design project when you work with Vellum Interiors.
