What is full service interior design?

It’s not every day that people hire an interior designer, so the differences in services provided from one firm to the other can be easily misunderstood. As a studio that provides full-service interior design, I thought I’d take a moment to explain what this actually means.

Full-service design basically means that the interior design studio manages the bulk of the work involved in a renovation or decoration project on behalf of their client. Everything from the initial design, through to selecting the items for the space, engaging any trades, placing the orders and managing the logistics of deliveries, as well as managing the timeline and budget. At Vellum Interiors this includes finishing the project with accessories and styling items like cushions, art, vases and decor items. Essentially, the renovation process is simplified and made easy for the homeowner.

Another way to describe it would be turn-key interior design — because all your need to do once it’s finished is turn the key to your dream space!

Studios which offer full-service design typically have an organised, structured process to transform your space. At Vellum Interiors, our process is as follows:

  • Step 1: An initial consultation where we meet at your home to review the goals for your space, plus go over anything you’d like to keep, and what you love and hate about the space. We also discuss any initial ideas. It’s great to have all stakeholders home, so we can get as much information as possible about what everyone needs and wants in their home. Following the meeting, we send through a summary of what we discussed, and an estimate of the hours it will take to complete that scope.
  • Step 2: We send through the letter of agreement, a deposit is paid and the project begins!
  • Step 3: This is where the work begins. We re-visit your home and thoroughly take measurements and photos of each space in the project. We may also bring along a builder or other trades involved so they can review your home as well.
  • Step 4: The bulk of our work happens here, and it’s an intense few weeks! This is when we do *all* the design work, including creating floor plans and drawings, sourcing all furniture, finishes, fabrics and fittings. We also brief any trades involved, and cost everything up. We make sure to touch base with you along the way to clarify any questions we have to ensure we have your best interests top of mind
  • Step 5: This is an exciting step, because it’s when we present to you the entire design; everything we’ve worked on for the past few weeks! (and fingers crossed you love the whole thing!)
  • Step 6: We place orders for all the items approved in the presentation, engage the trades and arrange delivery times.
  • Step 7: Orders are received for any on-site work (e.g. tiles, tapware, finishes etc.)
  • Step 8: If there’s any works happening, it begins now. Depending on your project, this could be just a fresh coat of paint on the walls, or the full renovation of your kitchen or bathroom.
  • Step 9: The furniture arrives and is installed, along with the accessories and styling items
  • Step 10: The Client Reveal! When you are welcomed home to a finished home.
  • Step 11: We sort out any defects, for example, any small items to be fixed by the trades, or any furniture that wasn’t delivered as ordered (this happens throughout the renovation project too)
  • Step 12: We have a final meeting to close out the project, including giving you a binder folder with the information on all the items in the project, warranties and care information. This is usually a bittersweet meeting because we’ll be great friends by this stage!

So, in 12 steps, that’s what our full-service interior design service entails. If this appeals to you, we’d love to help you out — contact us here. Thank you reading!
