Before & After – Balgowlah

Another before and after!! I *love* looking back at photos on my iPhone of my first visit to a client’s home, and wanted to share them with you here to show the beautiful transformation.

These clients came to me wanting to make better use of their open plan living and outdoor space. Since moving into the house 6 years ago — when their 3 children were all under 6 — they hadn’t done any renovations or updated any furniture. The clients were now ready to build on the base of their (already beautiful) space, to create a bit more of a grown-up’s home. With both parents working and a full-on schedule with their family, Vellum Interiors was engaged to design the spaces, engage trades, select and purchase furniture as well as styling.

Along with selecting all new furniture for the living room and deck, the requirements also included designing a fireplace with storage for AV equipment, as well as outdoor joinery to house the BBQ and provide lots of storage for garden equipment plus a bench seat to soak up the sun in the north-facing garden. The result is the perfect indoor / outdoor summer / winter living space, which will be used all year round!

Living Room

As you can see in the “befores”, the house had “great bones”. It was only built in 2012, so it was a great canvas to work on, but needed a freshen up and also some more functional storage to hide some things away. A key consideration was to make all the new built-in joinery look as though it had always been there.

Outdoor Space

The outdoor space was a decent size, and flowed well from inside to out. Without a garage or shed, though, the clients were in desperate need of some storage out here too! The garden gets lovely north sun most of the day so we wanted to capitalise on this, and help the clients make better use of the space.

What the clients had to say (and this is one of the best testimonials I’ve ever had!):

Alex performs magic. She listens, cares, has excellent judgement and a practical and beautiful aesthetic. When (small) things go wrong, she is proactive and pulls rabbits out of hats to make it right, quickly. She can be trusted to make the right design and product decisions, but is also open to (sometimes quirky) client preferences. She is a great communicator, and has strong relationships with her tradespeople, who deliver a quality product and who are a pleasure to have around our home. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Heartfelt thank you Alex for making our home beautiful!
