Our clients were nearing the end of a three-year renovation when they asked us to complete their home with furniture and accessories. After such a lengthy process, they were deep in “decision fatigue.”

Drawing inspiration from the home’s architecture, coastal location, and the clients’ art collection and laid-back style, we curated pieces that embodied their vision of a modern Australian beach house. We reworked the furniture plan, selecting items that complemented the existing pieces, the new architecture, and the coastal environment.

From InsideOut magazine: “The result was sandy textures and hues paired with oceanic blues and breezy neutrals, while clean-lined furniture and flashes of brass kept the look a notch above ‘beachy casual.’”

When we met the owners of this Curl Curl home, their downstairs living area was under-utilised, serving as a mix of living room, teenage gaming space, gym, and occasional work-from-home area during Covid. They were after a low-key yet sophisticated area for relaxation and entertaining, somewhere that felt special enough to celebrate an upcoming milestone birthday as well. Their top priority was a fireplace.

We reconfigured the space, designing distinct zones, a custom fireplace with concealed TV, built-in bar, and selected furniture, finishes, and lighting. The outdoor area was also revamped with a sandstone wall, decking, and new furniture.

The result is a chic, laid-back space that transformed the home. Our clients are thrilled, and best of all, we created a great connection between us along the way — it was bittersweet when the project finished!

Our clients had recently downsized to this mid-century harbourside beauty when they reached out to us to help it function better while honouring its unique architecture. Coming from a larger, older house, they wanted to bring in colour and personality without overshadowing the home’s unique architectural features.

To bring this to life, we drew inspiration from the existing architecture and the surrounding landscape, creating a palette of blues, greens, lilacs, and pinks. We also wanted to make the home feel warm, welcoming, and fun for family gatherings.

Starting by producing furniture plans to maximise the unusual layout, we then went about selecting all new furniture, lighting, and finishes, including a number of custom pieces — the shelving by the fireplace and bespoke wall paneling and the walnut buffet in the dining room.

The clients said: “We are so happy with the result that the team at Vellum achieved. Our ‘mid-century’ house is now such a warm, inviting, light and fun home that feels just right!”

In the second stage of Holbrook House, we were engaged to re-design the first floor bathrooms and master suite. 

Starting by creating three different floor plan options to meet the clients’ requirements, we landed on the final option – combining two side-by-side bathrooms into one larger one, and turning the existing walk-in-robe into an ensuite. Custom joinery around the bed gives plenty of wardrobe space, and, being floor-to-ceiling, gives the impression it’s built into the wall. 

The new bathrooms, powder room and master suite now seamlessly integrate into the rest of the house and provide a beautiful upgrade to the first floor.

Our clients had lived in their Californian Bungalow for many years, with a lot of inherited furniture that didn’t feel like “them”. The layout felt disjointed, leaving the sitting and dining rooms barely used.

At a loss with how to make the rooms work better, they engaged us. In terms of style, they sought a more contemporary aesthetic while preserving heritage details. We reconfigured the sitting room to make it more inviting, using a light, bright colour scheme and organic shapes, while the dining room became a dramatic, dark blue space with angular lines, for a little more formality.

The result is two completely transformed rooms that the clients (and their schnauzers) love, with a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort.

After moving their young family back to Sydney from London, our clients struggled to make their new Californian Bungalow feel like home. Despite its beautiful period details, the front of the house felt cold and lacked personality, leading to them being barely used.

Inspired by the home’s heritage and the family’s fun personalities, we redesigned the front of the house to suit modern living. This included a larger bathroom, a purpose-built home office, guest bedroom, and a sophisticated parents’ retreat with a custom fireplace. We also designed custom panelling to the hallway walls, and re-stained the original floorboards to a darker, more sophisticated tone. To add character, we used a palette of blues, greens, and pops of red, nodding to the family’s London home which had a bright red front door.

We are thrilled with the result, which is a complete transformation. The house is now warm, inviting, and functional and perfectly reflects the family’s lifestyle.

After having tenants live in the property for a number of years, the owners of this apartment came to Vellum Interiors when they were ready to make the apartment their home. The apartment wasn’t in great shape, was dark and pokey, and overall felt a bit sad!

Vellum Interiors re-designed the kitchen and dining area, opening up the space by removing a wall, adding new floorboards, decorative ceiling battening, and an in-built bench seat. Because the kitchen was in such a small area, it was essential to spend extra time and thought considering how to pack in as much practical storage as possible, without it feeling overcrowded.

The result is a much lighter, brighter and happier space that our clients are very happy living in.
